MSP is proud to celebrate 125 years of service to the Northwest Georgia community. The Rome News-Tribune recently featured our firm’s journey from our founding in 1899 by George Edmondson Maddox and Col. William S. McHenry to our present-day operations as one of the leading law firms in this part of the state.

The article highlights the firm’s commitment to professional excellence, our deep community roots, and the mentorship legacy of attorneys like Oscar Smith, who helped shape the culture of integrity that continues to define MSP today.

To commemorate this milestone, MSP is establishing two college scholarships in partnership with the Community Foundation of Greater Rome, to be awarded to students from Floyd and Polk counties.

MSP is pleased to announce that our attorney Trey Newton has been accepted into New York University School of Law’s prestigious Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation program. NYU’s tax law program is ranked #1 in the nation and maintains a highly selective admission process.

During this advanced program, Trey will continue working full-time at MSP while pursuing his LLM through part-time studies. He will focus on specialized areas of tax law including estate & gift tax, business taxation, and advanced tax planning strategies. Trey follows in the footsteps of MSP Partner Brian Bojo, who completed the same program in 2019.

MSP Partner Ben Stell recently settled a personal injury case for $400,000. Ben’s client suffered severe internal injuries after an automobile collision in DeKalb County, and Ben was able to secure the maximum settlement from both the at-fault driver’s insurance and the client’s underinsured motorist (UM) coverage. Rome native Kelsey A. Richardson was sworn in yesterday afternoon by Superior Court Judge Billy Sparks, marking her admission to the Georgia Bar and ability to practice law. A Coosa High School and Berry College alum, Kelsey earned her J.D. from Cumberland School of Law in 2024. We’re excited to have Kelsey as an Associate on our team and anticipate the positive impact she’ll make in our community through her dedication to the practice of law.

We are proud to announce that our partner, Chris Jackson, has been sworn in as a member of the Executive Committee of the Council of Municipal Court Judges of Georgia, representing the 7th Judicial Administrative District. Elected at the recent Municipal Court Judge’s summer conference, Chris joins a distinguished group of 20 representatives from across Georgia’s judicial districts. This Executive Committee serves as the governing board for the Council, providing crucial leadership on key policy issues affecting municipal courts throughout our state.

MSP partner Andy Garner has been elected to the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Highlands College Foundation, continuing the firm’s longstanding commitment to supporting higher education in our region. The late Judge James D. Maddox, while a partner at the firm, was instrumental in establishing the predecessor to Georgia Highlands, Floyd Junior College, while serving on the Board of Regents. The downtown Rome campus is named for Judge Maddox. Georgia Highlands is a multi-campus, state college member of the University System of Georgia serving students across 30 counties in northwest Georgia. Andy has practiced law for over 20 years in Rome, and concentrates in the areas of local government, estate planning, estate administration, real estate and commercial law.
