Virginia came to the firm in 1991, and became a partner with McRae, Smith, Peek, Harman & Monroe (formerly Smith, Shaw and Maddox) in 1993. Virginia was previously associated with the firm of Hine and Carroll in Rome. She also served as Assistant District Attorney for the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit in Lafayette, Georgia from 1982-1983. She serves as County Attorney for Floyd County having been appointed in July of 2020.

Virginia’s practice is centered upon assisting business, government, banking and individual clients with all aspects of their legal needs including but not limited to business formation and operations, contracts, mergers or asset sales, employment law including personnel matters of all types, employment contract drafting and litigation including a deep background in noncompete and restrictive covenants in employment contracts, construction contract negotiation and arbitration and environmental issues. She has experience advising business clients and individual employees regarding employment discrimination and harassment claims, Fair Labor Standard Act claims including class actions, ADA and FMLA claims and virtually all aspects of the employer/employee relationship. She also has assisted clients mergers and acquisitions and in raising capital through Reg. D private placements.

Virginia has handled complex civil litigation in most United States District Court Divisions, State and Federal Appeals Courts and in Superior Courts all over the State of Georgia. She is also a member of the Bar of the U.S. Tax Court. She has served as a member of both the Investigative and Review Panels of the State Bar of Georgia’s Disciplinary Board.

Virginia is Past Chair of and current member of the Legal Counsel Section of the Georgia Bankers Association.. She has served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Georgia since 2006. She has been recognized by Georgia Trend Magazine as one of Georgia’s “Legal Elite” and in addition to her “AV” rating, Martindale Hubbell has named her in its inaugural class of the “Southeast’s Leading Women Lawyers”. Virginia was named by CEO Monthly “Leading Business Women of the Year” for 2018.

Virginia has been active in supporting the local free legal clinic for US Veterans and has actively supported numerous community not for profit organizations. She is currently Chair of the Board of Trustees of The Georgia Conservancy. She is past Chairman of the Board and legal counsel for Cancer Navigators, Inc., a nonprofit serving cancer patients and their families in Northwest Georgia.
