This week MSP, among other local firms, sponsored a reception and fundraiser to benefit the candidacy of our local Municipal Court Judge Bryan Johnson. Judge Johnson, who is now running for Floyd County Superior Court Judge, gave a heartfelt speech about the role of the court system to safeguard the rights of all citizens without regard to position, wealth or influence. Pictured left to right are Ben Stell, Jule Peek, Judge Bryan Johnson, Ret. Justice Norman Fletcher (of Brinson Askew), and Chris Jackson.

Rob Monroe has settled yet another workers compensation claim against a local resort for $95,000 lump sum after his client, a banquet server, injured his shoulder and neck carrying heavy trays of plates and glassware. Rob’s client eventually had to undergo surgery with a specialist at Emory to correct a suprascapular nerve entrapment in the shoulder. The employer fought the claim from the beginning and refused to pay Rob’s client any income benefits or pay any medical expenses, contending that the injury was not related to the client’s job. That’s when Rob got involved and ultimately forced the employer to compensate his client for lost wages and all related medical expenses.

MSP this day recognizes and honors those fallen officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. The 23rd Annual Peace Officers Memorial Service was held at the Law Enforcement Memorial Plaza to pay homage to the twenty fallen officers of Rome/Floyd County. We express our deepest gratitude to them, as well as all of our law enforcement offers who fearlessly confront danger to keep us and our community safe.

Rob Monroe recently settled another workers compensation claim against a local building contractor for $80,000. Rob’s client was an inspector for the contractor and was seriously injured in 2015 when he accidentally fell eight feet off of a ladder and through the roof of a building he was inspecting. Rob’s client suffered a fractured femur, upper arm, and shoulder, and was out of work for a number of weeks before making somewhat of a miraculous recovery and returning to a light duty. Even after the client returned to work, Rob was able to force the insurance company to continue to compensate him for his wage loss due to the injury. The building contractor eventually went out of business, which opened the door for a settlement of the claim.

MSP’s Chris Jackson serves on the Heart of the Community Board which honored 11 unsung heroes in our community this past weekend for their service. The annual event also promotes heart health in support of February as Heart Month. Chris was the Chair of the Heart of the Community Heart Walk-Cycle-Paddle which is a healthy kick-off to the Heart of the Community where participants may walk, cycle or kayak through downtown Rome. Despite the chilly temperatures on Saturday morning, a large crowd gathered for the Heart Walk-Cycle-Paddle which also serves as a fundraiser for the organization. The Heart of the Community Foundation awarded over $61,000.00 in grants to local non-profits this weekend so that they can continue to do great work in Rome and Floyd County.
